Federal authorities have arrested a teenager accused of plotting to kill a North Texas lawmaker, an incident that has heightened security concerns as the region prepares for the upcoming election. The alleged target, Representative Keith Self, confirmed to reporters that his campaign was alerted by U.S. Capitol Police on October 6 regarding the arrest of a 17-year-old from McKinney.

Investigators told the congressman's team that the suspect had been radicalized and was under surveillance by federal agents. Authorities allege the teen was planning a terrorist attack inspired by ISIS and intended to target Representative Self during a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. That event was expected to draw former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. The FBI Dallas office has not yet released further details regarding the ongoing investigation.

Upon learning of the alleged plot, Self said he immediately increased his vigilance. He noted that while he already maintained a security detail, he adjusted his situational awareness to address the potential threat. 'At that point we upped our profile and we're a little more aware, although I had plenty of security,' Self said.

Self, who is seeking his third term representing Texas' third congressional district, explained that his military background helped him process the news calmly. He stated that having deployed to combat zones allowed him to approach the situation with a level head. 'I'm happy it happened to me because people that have never dealt with this before tend to freak out when somebody tells you that somebody's trying to kill you,' Self said. He added that his wife, a military spouse for 25 years, understands the risks involved and is taking the matter seriously.

The congressman acknowledged that while he has received threats previously, none had previously resulted in an arrest. 'We knew there were threats, but nothing has risen to the level of an arrest,' Self said. 'That's what makes this different.' He emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that it could have been a very serious incident based on the information provided to him.

Despite the allegations, Self proceeded to attend the scheduled veterans event on October 17. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans, stating that nothing occurred during the gathering. He has also continued his campaign activities, including polling greeting, arguing that the incident will not deter him from alerting the public to what he describes as a political ideology he opposes.

The arrest comes at a time when Self has taken a prominent stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a resolution denouncing the practice and asserting the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law of the land. The teen involved in the investigation has not been publicly identified as the inquiry continues. Self's opponent in the midterm election, Evan Hunt, also condemned the alleged plot on social media.
