DJ Akademiks declared on his podcast that the rapper Drake is poised to secure the largest record advance in history. The radio host described the potential contract as the biggest deal on the books in terms of what a label would have to pay upfront.

Akademiks, who has publicly supported Drake since the Canadian artist’s career began to shift in the spring of 2024, spoke about the negotiations during a recent episode of his NFR podcast. He framed the upcoming deal as a historic moment for the music industry, regardless of Drake’s current public standing.

The claim follows Drake’s completion of a $400 million agreement with Universal Music Group. That previous contract covered a period during which he released three albums in May: "Iceman," "Habibti," and "Maid Of Honour." With that deal now concluded, Drake enters the market as a free agent seeking a new financial arrangement.

The rapper’s recent release strategy has shown mixed results in the marketplace. While the three May albums all entered the top three spots on the Billboard 200 chart upon release, the tracks did not generate the same level of commercial hit status seen in his earlier career. This data point is central to the debate over whether major labels are willing to exceed the previous $400 million benchmark.

Akademiks’s comments come against the backdrop of a highly publicized rivalry with Kendrick Lamar, whose 2024 track "Not Like Us" is widely cited as a turning point in Drake’s reputation. The host’s advocacy for a record-breaking advance aims to reinforce Drake’s status as a top-tier commercial asset despite recent changes in his social and critical standing.

The podcast appearance serves as a public signal of the rapper’s market value. Akademiks did not name a specific label or provide a dollar figure for the new advance, but he characterized the expected sum as unparalleled in the genre’s history. The statement positions the upcoming signing as a definitive test of Drake’s enduring star power.
