Real Madrid entered Sunday’s match at Camp Nou as the underdog, facing a Barcelona side that had won its first nine league games. The visitors left the stadium with a 2-1 victory, ending the host’s perfect start to the season.
Kylian Mbappe provided the decisive performance with two goals. His brace brought his total for Real Madrid to 100 goals across all competitions since joining the club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. The French forward now has 14 goals in the current season and stands as the second-best scorer in La Liga.
The win stopped Barcelona from breaking the record for the best start to a Spanish top flight season, a mark set by Real Madrid in 1968-69. It also marked the second consecutive loss for Hansi Flick’s team, following a recent defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
The result shifted the historical balance of the rivalry. Real Madrid now holds the all-time head-to-head edge with 107 wins compared to Barcelona’s 106. The victory also gave the visitors bragging rights in a match that drew tens of thousands of supporters to the Camp Nou stands.
Manager Jose Mourinho, who returned to the club after a 13-year absence, praised the team’s focus on the title race. “If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn’t playing to win at the Camp Nou,” Mourinho said. “They’re playing to win the championship.” He followed his post-match celebration with a knee slide before addressing the press.
Real Madrid’s form has improved since earlier setbacks against Real Betis and Atletico Madrid. The team has now won five consecutive matches, including three in La Liga and two in Europe. This run has helped them climb to third place in the league table with 24 points after 10 games.
Barcelona leads the standings with 27 points, while Atletico Madrid sits in second with 25. The gap between the top of the table and Real Madrid is currently three points. With just over a quarter of the league season completed, the title race remains tight.
Mbappe’s milestone goal came one day before the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, where he is considered a strong contender. Last season, he won the La Liga top scorer award, the Champions League top scorer award, and the World Cup Golden Boot. He also became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.
