San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch secured a trade for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner on Tuesday. The Niners will send a 2027 fourth-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts to bring back the veteran pass rusher. This marks the first major roster addition for the 6-1 team ahead of the November 10 trade deadline.

The reunion was long anticipated by the San Francisco organization. Lynch originally drafted Buckner with the seventh overall pick in 2016. He moved the player to Indianapolis in March 2020, a transaction Lynch later described as the toughest decision of his tenure. Over the following years, the 49ers attempted to replicate Buckner’s impact through various methods without achieving the same result.

San Francisco tried to fill the void using different resources. The team selected Javon Kinlaw with high draft capital, signed Javon Hargrave as a free agent, and later turned to a smaller combination involving Maliek Collins. These efforts did not restore the defensive line to its previous level of performance.

Conditions for a return improved in 2026. The Niners struggled to consistently pressure the quarterback and faced multiple injuries on the defensive line. Simultaneously, Buckner expressed frustration with his situation in Indianapolis. A post on social media on October 18 showed the tackle discussing his dissatisfaction, prompting fullback Kyle Juszczyk to comment on the image.

Teammates had been actively pushing for the acquisition for weeks. Tight end George Kittle asked Lynch in person if he intended to trade for Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Khalil Mack. Kittle also noted that the group often teases Lynch about potential targets to see if he reveals any information.

The locker room reacted positively to the completed deal. Kittle, Juszczyk, and wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. celebrated on social media platforms. Kittle posted a message declaring the group was back, tagging Buckner and Juszczyk in the announcement.

The 49ers will use the remainder of the bye week to evaluate their roster. The organization has not ruled out additional transactions before the trade deadline. Players on the roster continue to provide input to coaching staff on potential targets they have faced during their careers.
