The New York Knicks defeated the Detroit Pistons 111-97 on Tuesday night, snapping a three-game losing streak and ending a start that threatened to mirror the franchise’s only previous four-game losing open. The victory marks the first win for a team that began the season with losses to Philadelphia, Boston, and Orlando.

The Pistons, who were undefeated entering the game, took a 38-25 lead after the first quarter. The momentum shifted completely in the second and third periods, where the Knicks outscored Detroit 63-25. This second-half surge mirrors the point differentials the team recorded during their championship run last spring.

Coach Mike Brown attributed the turnaround to an increase in positive plays across the full roster. He noted that the team generated more good moments in this contest than in their first three games combined, which directly led to the victory.

The Knicks entered the season with the same starting lineup that went 16-3 in the playoffs, a record-setting postseason performance in point differential. They had lost as many games in their first three regular-season contests as they did in the previous 19 playoff games. A fourth loss Tuesday would have made them the first reigning champions to lose their first four games since the 1969-70 Boston Celtics.

Karl-Anthony Towns led the team with 27 points and 20 rebounds. He emphasized that the team focused on physicality and energy to resemble their previous season’s identity. He acknowledged that the team still has room for improvement but viewed the result as a positive test.

Jalen Brunson, the NBA Finals MVP, struggled early in the game, going 1 for 9 from the field in the first half. He broke his slump in the third quarter by making his first three shots, sparking an 11-0 run that turned a one-point halftime lead into a 62-50 advantage. Brunson finished with 23 points and seven assists despite shooting 5 for 18.

Mikal Bridges provided a shooting boost from the perimeter. He went 4 for 8 on three-point attempts, scoring 12 points. This performance contrasts with his first three games, where he averaged 3.3 points and missed all 10 three-point attempts.

The Knicks had ranked last in the league with an average of 101.7 points per game. Brown prioritized improving their pace, noting that better defense created more transition opportunities. The team’s ability to play faster was a key factor in Tuesday’s output.

New York travels to Chicago on Wednesday to complete a back-to-back schedule. Brown stated that the team will experience hiccups during the long season. He indicated that the goal is to have their performance peak in the playoffs, similar to last year. He confirmed that the team is capable of high-level play when focused, even if the issues are not fully resolved.
