Bruce Springsteen will headline the 20th anniversary of Stand Up for Heroes on Nov. 9 at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. The annual benefit concert provides financial support to injured veterans, their families, and caregivers. Organizers announced the lineup this week, marking two decades of the event's existence.
The musical program includes singer Alex Warren and The Resilient, a band composed of wounded U.S. combat veterans. The comedy segment features Jon Stewart, Hasan Minhaj, and Josh Johnson, all associated with The Daily Show. The Bob Woodruff Foundation and the New York Comedy Festival are presenting the event as part of the festival's Nov. 6 to 15 schedule.
Stand Up for Heroes launched in 2007 following the serious injury of ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff during a reporting assignment in Iraq in 2006. Woodruff and his wife, Lee, partnered with New York Comedy Festival founders Caroline Hirsch and Andrew Fox to create the showcase. The event combines comedy, music, and personal stories from military service to raise funds for the foundation's mission.
Bob Woodruff noted the event has expanded far beyond its initial scope. He recalled, "When we started this way back in 2007 we thought it would just be a one-time concert. But it’s become one of the most meaningful nights of the year." The foundation states the campaign has generated more than $113 million to date, though recent reports cite a total of $117 million.
Past participants have included Stephen Colbert, Jerry Seinfeld, John Oliver, John Mulaney, Ricky Gervais, Jim Gaffigan, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Tickets for this year's milestone edition are available for purchase online.
