Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson exited his first game back from an ankle sprain on the opening play after suffering a right thumb injury. The two-time MVP was ruled out midgame and placed on injured reserve, requiring surgery. This leaves the team without its top two signal callers for the rest of the season.
Jackson dropped back to pass on the first offensive snap against the Buffalo Bills. His throwing hand collided with Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau during the follow-through. He jogged off the field immediately with his hand motionless. Coach Jesse Minter confirmed after the game that Jackson needs surgery and will not return.
Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley entered the game at the start. He had started the previous three games while Jackson recovered from a high ankle sprain. Huntley suffered a toe injury midway through the second quarter after being tackled by Ed Oliver. He was ruled out at halftime, leaving the Ravens without a proven starter.
Emergency third quarterback Joe Fagnano entered the game for his NFL debut. The 25-year-old went undrafted out of UConn in April and had never played a regular season snap. He completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and one interception. Baltimore lost to Buffalo 36 to 10.
The Bills took a 7-0 lead on their opening drive. The Ravens trailed 13-7 when Huntley left the game. Fagnano's first possession ended with a missed field goal attempt by Tyler Loop from 34 yards out. The injury to Jackson and Huntley occurs while the Ravens hold a 4-3 record. They face the Jacksonville Jaguars at home on Thursday night.
