At the most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by Anthropic's venture capital backers already total billions of dollars, a figure that underscores the sheer scale of the AI boom. This valuation stands in stark contrast to the company's earlier rounds, where entry prices were a fraction of today's numbers. For instance, the company was valued at just $461 million as recently as 2021. The disparity between these early entry points and the current market value highlights the exponential growth that has defined the last few years in artificial intelligence. While the public listing is expected to occur this year at a valuation potentially reaching $2 trillion, the current private figures already represent a significant windfall for those who held shares through the latest funding rounds.

The timeline of Anthropic's valuation growth is a steep curve that has left some early investors with life-changing sums. In 2021, the company’s Series A round set the valuation at $461 million. By 2023, the Series C round had pushed that number up to $5 billion. The pace accelerated further in the following year, with the valuation reaching $183 billion by the time a major late-stage investment was made. Most recently, the company reached a $380 billion valuation earlier this year, before settling at the current $965 billion mark for private market calculations. This rapid escalation means that even investors who entered the company in its later stages have seen their portfolios expand dramatically in a relatively short window.

Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, is one of the most prominent figures to benefit from this trajectory. He invested in the 2021 Series A when the startup was worth significantly less than it is today. According to PitchBook data, his entry point was during that $461 million valuation. Today, Schmidt owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation of $965 billion, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion. This figure represents a massive return on his initial investment, which was made just a few years ago when the AI landscape was less saturated with capital.

Iconiq, an investment outfit that took a massive late-stage bet, also stands to gain substantially. Last year, the firm wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That single investment is now valued at $17 billion. While this represents a strong return, the potential upside remains significant. If the IPO proceeds as anticipated and the valuation hits the $2 trillion mark, Iconiq’s position has the potential to double again. This late-stage entry demonstrates that even investors who missed the early, lower-cost rounds can still achieve extraordinary returns in the AI sector.

Menlo Ventures, which led the company’s Series D, has invested more than $1 billion in Anthropic over time. Their cumulative stake is now worth approximately $14 billion at the current private valuation. This firm’s strategy involved sustained investment throughout the company's growth phases, rather than a single large entry. The result is a diversified position that has appreciated significantly. The $14 billion valuation of their stake reflects the compounded effect of the company's rising market cap, rewarding their long-term commitment to the AI lab.

Sequoia, the famed venture capital firm, entered the picture earlier this year, when Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. The firm invested $3 billion to secure about 1% ownership. Despite entering at a high valuation, Sequoia has already more than doubled its investment. This rapid appreciation is a testament to the continued market enthusiasm for Anthropic. The fact that a late entrant could double their money in such a short period suggests that the market expects further growth, potentially leading to the reported $2 trillion valuation at IPO.

Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, took a different approach by starting small and scaling up. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. Since then, they have funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This combined investment has resulted in a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, but the original firm’s position in Anthropic remains a significant part of its portfolio.

Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to have a board seat at Anthropic. They invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round, when the valuation was $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. This is one of the most dramatic multiples of returns among the listed investors. The combination of a low entry price and a high current valuation has created a substantial profit for the firm. Their board seat may also provide them with insights that could influence future strategic decisions at the company.

As Anthropic prepares for its public listing, the focus will shift from private market valuations to public market performance. The expected IPO this year could see the valuation reach as high as $2 trillion, which would further increase the stakes for all these backers. However, the current private figures already illustrate the magnitude of the gains. For investors who entered in 2021 or 2023, the returns are already in the billions. As the company moves toward the public markets, the question remains whether the market will sustain this level of valuation or if a correction is in order. The coming months will likely provide a clearer picture of how these multi-billion dollar stakes will perform in the public arena.
