VIA Metropolitan Transit will place two Chevrolet Equinox electric vehicles into active service in downtown San Antonio on Thursday, Oct. 29.
The agency added the SUVs to its VIA Link Downtown fleet to test new transportation technology. The service has completed 2.5 million trips since launching in 2019. VIA President and CEO Jon Gary Herrera stated that the addition allows the agency to determine which technologies best support operations and customer needs.
The new cars will operate exclusively within the existing VIA Link Downtown network. Riders cannot request an Equinox by name but will see the vehicle type in the app when assigned. The vehicles feature a VIA-branded design that includes specific markings to identify their electric power source.
The VIA Link Downtown service has carried nearly 34,000 passengers since its start. The agency also launched VIA Link After Midnight on Oct. 19, a pilot program for overnight workers and late-night riders. Both the electric vehicles and the new after-midnight service charge a flat fare of $1.30 per ride.
Customers book trips through the VIA Link app. The agency continues to assess downtown mobility options as the city grows.
