One curt question from a reporter reduced the 74-year-old football coach to a brief, testy rebuttal on Monday. Bill Belichick, head coach at the University of North Carolina, answered a query about his recent breakup with Jordon Hudson by asking, “Do you work for a tabloid now?”
The exchange occurred during a Tar Heels press conference, days after multiple outlets confirmed that Belichick and Hudson, 25, ended their relationship late last year. WRAL reporter Brian Murphy asked if the coach had any comment on the headlines and what the split might mean for the football program moving forward.
Belichick quickly closed the topic. He stated, “I’ll keep my personal comments and relationships to myself if that’s alright with you.” He then moved on, offering no further detail on the status of the 49-year age gap partnership that drew public attention when it went official in June 2024.
The couple’s dynamic had previously faced scrutiny. In April 2025, Hudson declined to explain how they met during a CBS Sunday Morning interview. When interviewer Tony Dokoupil pressed for the backstory, she responded, “We’re not talking about this.”
Belichick later defended her conduct to HuffPost, suggesting the broadcast was edited to create a false narrative. He noted that they had been open about meeting on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021. “She was not deflecting any specific question or topic but simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track,” he said.
Rumors persisted that Hudson was attempting to control aspects of the UNC program during their time together. Belichick called those claims “ridiculous” in a September interview with The Wall Street Journal. People magazine reports that the pair remain close friends and are committed to their business partnerships despite the romantic split.
Hudson had addressed online critics in an Instagram story on December 31, 2024. She wrote that she could not wait to “take punches” for Belichick in 2025, adding, “Keep swinging, Keyboard Warriors. Your illusion of righteousness only fuels my authenticity.”
