New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye threw two touchdown passes and rushed for a score to lead a late rally against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The Patriots won the game 24-19, erasing a 10-point deficit from the first half.
Maye played without his top three ball carriers. Wide receiver A.J. Brown (knee/ankle), Mack Hollins (calf), and running back TreVeyon Henderson (illness) all sat out the contest. Despite the thin roster, Maye completed 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards. He also rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Dolphins led 13-3 at halftime behind a 35-yard touchdown pass from Malik Willis to rookie Kevin Coleman Jr. Willis completed 21 of 32 passes for 211 yards in the loss. He was sacked five times and threw one interception. The Dolphins had just secured their first win of the season the previous week.
New England scored 21 unanswered points in the second half. DeMario Douglas caught a 48-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead. Later, Maye ran in a two-yard touchdown to give the Patriots a 24-19 edge with 59 seconds remaining in the third quarter. This marked his fifth straight game with at least three total touchdowns.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel challenged an initial incompletion call on a 43-yard pass to Kyle Williams. Officials reversed the decision to a touchdown after review. Vrabel said he was more certain of the call than the officials were. The win moves the Patriots' record to 5-3. Miami falls to 1-6.
Rhamondre Stevenson carried the ball 19 times for 82 yards for New England. Douglas added three receptions for 76 yards. Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon was removed from the game for one play after drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Willis told reporters that Gordon cares deeply about the game and needed to hear the truth about the situation.
The Patriots will host Green Bay next Sunday. Miami will host Detroit in the same time slot. The game featured several injury updates, including Patriots tight end Hunter Henry leaving in the second quarter with a foot injury.
