Bexar County officials released data on family violence outcomes for the previous year. The city-county Collaborative Commission on Domestic Violence (CCDV) documented 28 deaths in 2025. Commissioners reviewed these findings on Tuesday.

Sixteen of the victims died in incidents involving intimate partner violence. This group included three bystanders. The remaining 13 victims in those specific incidents consisted of seven women and six men. Firearms were present in more than half of all family violence-related deaths recorded in the report.

Judge Monique Diaz, co-chair of the commission, credited public awareness campaigns for helping reduce violence. She pointed to specific tools that allow residents to seek help quickly. This includes calling 2-1-1 or scanning QR codes found in public bathrooms.

Diaz noted that 13,500 people used the QR codes on City of San Antonio signage to request assistance. The city ordinance now requires these codes in bathrooms. The commission also highlighted prevention efforts such as intervention programs for perpetrators, parenting classes, and education on healthy relationships.

The report found that 42% of children assessed for mental health needs in local cases had witnessed domestic violence. Law enforcement handled a high volume of related calls. The San Antonio Police Department and Bexar County Sheriff's Office combined for 58,000 domestic violence-related calls in 2025.

More than 1,600 people received emergency shelter or temporary lodging during the year. The number of deaths in 2025 is lower than the 32 recorded in 2024. The commission stated that the county's intimate partner homicide rate is moving closer to the statewide average.

Despite this shift, Bexar County remains among the areas with the highest number of such deaths in Texas. County Judge Peter Sakai, who helped establish the commission, said the focus must remain on victim support. He emphasized that the solution does not require more staff or programs, but better listening to victims.
