Texas’ defensive unit dictated the pace of Saturday night’s game against Mississippi State, holding the Bulldogs to three points in a 31-3 victory at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns relied on their defensive depth to overcome a rough offensive line performance, extending their winning streak to two games.
Quarterback Arch Manning threw for three touchdowns and carried the ball a season-high 13 times. Head coach Steve Sarkisian utilized Manning on designed runs to add a new dimension to the attack. Despite these efforts, the offensive line allowed five sacks, prompting adjustments at the tackle positions. Sarkisian moved Andre Cojoe from the left side to the right side and inserted Melvin Siani.
The defense took control early in the second quarter. Maraad Watson, a 333-pound defensive tackle, returned a 61-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. The play resulted from a strip sack by Rasheem Biles, a linebacker who recorded three sacks in the game. Biles, a transfer from Pitt, has been a key factor in the defensive line’s pressure this season.
Mississippi State entered the game without starting quarterback Kamario Taylor, who suffered a turf toe injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Backup quarterbacks AJ Swann and Billy Puckett attempted to keep the offense moving, but the Texas defense generated seven sacks and nine tackles for loss. The Longhorns also played without defensive end Colin Simmons, who missed the game with a high ankle sprain.
The Longhorns’ record stands at 6-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The team’s path to the College Football Playoff has become narrower following losses to Oklahoma and Florida earlier in the season. To guarantee a bid, Texas must win its final six games. A 9-3 finish could still earn a spot, but the coaching staff is focused on the remaining schedule.
The Longhorns face two road games in their next stretch of the season. They will travel to play No. 23 Missouri and No. 15 LSU. These opponents present different challenges, requiring the defense to continue generating pressure on the ball carrier. The team has shown it can compete in these high-stakes environments when the defensive line plays with intensity.
Texas’ defense has been the primary driver of its success this year. The unit has created short fields for the offense and limited opponents’ scoring opportunities. The Longhorns will look to maintain this level of play as they enter the final six weeks of the season. The defense’s ability to force turnovers and stop the run will be crucial in the upcoming road tests.
