In October 2026, Tesla acknowledged that it is building its own maps to address common issues with its Full Self-Driving system. This includes improving the system’s ability to read speed limits, park, and choose routes. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s head of AI, confirmed this on the Q3 2026 earnings call, revealing that the company is developing its own mapping and navigation architecture using AI. This architecture will learn from the collective experiences of Tesla’s fleet and will adapt to individual drivers’ preferences.

Seven years ago, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, dismissed maps as a ‘really bad idea’ that would make a self-driving system ‘extremely brittle.’ At that time, he also called lidar a ‘fool’s errand.’ He argued that Tesla would solve driving with cameras and AI alone, unlike companies like Waymo, which relied on lidar and detailed maps. This shift in strategy shows that Tesla’s fleet is now doing the same job Waymo’s cars do: mapping the roads to help the self-driving system understand what it can’t reliably figure out on its own.

Tesla fans had argued that Waymo’s approach differs because it creates HD maps with lidar. But ultimately, both companies are creating their own maps. If your argument is that Tesla’s maps are less well-defined and needed for driving for different reasons than Waymo’s, you don’t really have an argument. This is especially true now that Tesla has admitted that it needs maps to fix some of the most common problems with its Full Self-Driving system.

What we are seeing now is that Tesla’s AI-based mapping and navigation architecture will start handling the beginning and end of trips with FSD v15. Over the following months, it will take over navigation, parking, and destination handling. This change is driven by the recognition that understanding the environment, such as reading speed limit signs and parking, is essential for reliable self-driving. If an end-to-end vision system can’t reliably read and apply it, and the fix is a better map, then vision alone isn’t doing the job Tesla said it would.
