Katie Zacharia stated on Tuesday that she was unprepared for the hostile tone of her interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. The former White House press secretary described the exchange as a source of ongoing confusion regarding the rapid end to her tenure.

Zacharia appeared on the show shortly after beginning her role. At that time, she was already facing scrutiny over a difficult first press briefing and reports that she had failed the bar exam while identifying as an attorney. Hannity questioned why she had not disclosed her legal status upfront before focusing on her performance during the initial briefing, which he noted received only three questions.

Newsmax host Rob Finnerty expressed shock at the treatment Zacharia received. He suggested the interview may have been orchestrated with approval from the White House to create a negative narrative. Fox News later denied this accusation to Mediaite, praising Hannity’s authenticity in the exchange.

Zacharia was dismissed hours after a subsequent appearance on Fox & Friends on Friday. This marked just five days into her position. When asked if she would return to Hannity’s show, Zacharia said she does not back away from a fight. She cited her experience debating hostile guests on CNN as evidence of her ability to maintain decorum under pressure.

She explained that if she had known the interview would be confrontational, she would have prepared herself differently. Zacharia noted that she had a friendly relationship with Hannity earlier in the year. Her team had even contacted her about working as a street interviewer in California, suggesting no prior interest in her educational background.

Zacharia pointed to statements Hannity made on October 13, where he defended her publicly. Because of that supportive history, she was not ready for the hostility she encountered during the broadcast. She said the shift in tone left her perplexed about what specifically happened during that segment.
