Tesla is preparing to hand over its first autonomous Cybercab units to customers before the close of 2026, ending months of speculation regarding when the vehicle would move from testing to retail. The timeline was revealed during the company's third-quarter 2026 earnings call on October 21. Lars Moravy, Tesla's Vice President of Engineering, told investors that the company is attempting to complete these transactions by the end of the calendar year.
Moravy outlined the current manufacturing status, noting that production is proceeding on the line at Gigafactory Texas. However, he clarified that every unit completed to date has been allocated to Tesla's internal Robotaxi fleet rather than outside buyers. The company intends to begin distributing fully designed autonomous vehicles to customers as operations scale, with the Cybercab serving as the first example of this policy. Deliveries to private buyers are expected to commence in small quantities initially, as the automaker acquires experience with the logistics of delivering vehicles to owners.
CEO Elon Musk added context to the nature of these transactions, emphasizing that the Cybercab is not intended to be a personal ownership vehicle comparable to the Model 3, Model Y, or the upcoming Roadster. Instead, he described the vehicle as primarily a transport-as-a-service offering. Regarding fleet composition, Musk stated, 'The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be Tesla-owned and transport-as-a-service.'
The Cybercab is a purpose-built, two-seat vehicle designed to operate without a steering wheel or pedals, relying entirely on the Full Self-Driving suite. Manufacturing for the model commenced in February 2026, and early units were deployed into the Robotaxi service when public rides began in early September. Regarding pricing, the company previously indicated it would aim to sell Cybercabs for approximately $30,000.
While the timeline for Cybercab sales has been set, other technological milestones are scheduled for a later date. During the call, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's Head of AI, indicated that Unsupervised Full Self-Driving is expected to be released for consumer cars during the second quarter of 2027. This capability would allow for autonomous operation outside of direct company control, though regulatory approvals may vary by region.
Looking ahead to the planned deliveries this December, there are operational factors the company must navigate. Deliveries of these units to the public would mark the first time such vehicles operate outside the company's direct control. Furthermore, early buyers or fleet operators may receive vehicles whose autonomous operation remains geographically restricted due to lagging regulatory agencies. The company has not provided further details on specific delivery dates or quantities.
